Don't Recall Chris Duncan!!!

Posted on: June 11, 2008 12:19 pm

If Albert Pujols were to go down for an extended amount of time, I strongly believe Chris Duncan should not be called up. I know that according to Bernie Miklas and Randy, there is this supposed rabid force of Cardinals fans out to lynch Duncan, but I am not apart of that group. I just realize that Chris Duncan has not proved that he can sustain a large period of time in the majors as of now. He needs to remain in AAA where he can play on an everyday basis in order to figure out left-handed pitching. If he can do that (he is batting .190 in AAA), the Cardinals need to market him to the rest of the league as a first baseman. He has also shown that despite a slight improvement in the outfield among some really good catches, that he is not comfortable running down some routine fly balls and is more a liability than an asset in the outfield. A liability due to lacking of skills and more important taking away time from players that deserve it more.

I think there are 2 options the Cardinals should examine before bringing up Duncan and they both rest on placing the large frame of Joe Mather at 1B. The Cardinals already have 4 outfielders that they can count on. Obviously Mather was brought up in order to have another guy that can hit left handed pitching so I think the Cardinals should try Nick Stavinoha. The guy is tearing it up in Memphis batting .342 wit 7 HRs and 13 doubles. He does strikeout more than he walks, but he is another solid defender that bats right handed.

If that is not an option because the Cards may assess themselves as having sufficient offensive depth even with moving Mather to 1st, then the Cardinals should try either John Wasdin or Jaime Garcia in the bullpen. Wasdin isn't lighting it up for Memphis but they both posses dominant K/BB ratios, which I believe gives Dave Duncan the most to work with. Wasdin is a right handed starter and Jaime is a left-handed starter recently brought up from Springfield and is responding well with a 3.16 ERA.

What do you think and explain why.

Don't Recall Chris Duncan!!!

Anytime Pujols goes down, it's a crucial time for the Cards.  Although there is some great talent in Memphis in guys like Nick Stavinoha, we can't afford to take the risk of bringing these guys up and waiting for them to adjust to Major League pitching.

Duncan was batting around .250 when he was sent down.  That is definitely below expectations, but not bad enough to forget about him all together.  In Duncan's tenure with the Cards, it has not been his bad that has worried me.  He has shown 40+ homer potential.  That hasn't disappeared.  He just needs to find his groove.

The thing that has bothered me about Duncan is his god-awful defense.  The guy has no business being in the outfield.  His natural position is first base and so far he has played it pretty solidly.

With that being said, my feelings wouldn't be hurt if Duncan was traded to an AL team for another solid starting pitcher.  Let him go over there and DH.

Don't Recall Chris Duncan!!!

I don't profess to know the answer Cowboy, but it seems that Chris Duncan can play a capable first base. He's dreadful in the outfield.

Since Albert is the regular first baseman, I think I'd give Duncan a shot, if for no other reason than to jack up his currently diminished trade value. He might get on a roll and then with the return of Pujols, they could try to shop him.

If he plays poorly for about seven to ten games, then maybe I try Joe Mather or Nick Stavinoha.

BTW, being a big Cardinals fan, you might enjoy looking at my Tigers-Cardinals blog from yesterday. I'd like to know how you feel about things I explore there.

About What Grinds My Gears.
Do you want to know what grinds my gears? What grinds my gears is when dumb athletes.....Roger Clemens......Derek Jeter.....go on and on about this I thought it was innocent until proven guilty, and how it used to be innocent until proven guilty. I just wish people would think before they ever make this stupid comment again. It makes absolutely no sense and has absolutely no baring. First of all, the only people that innocent until proven guilty apply to are Judges and Jurors PERIOD. Not the public and certainly not investigators. Could you imagine how this world would be if any type of investigator would believe the people they are pursuing are innocent? "Ehhh this guy is innocent so why pursue him?" Understand me? On top of that, if it were the public courts responsibility to take all people getting accused as innocent until proven guilty, who is to say what it takes to prove an individual. Proof is as subjective as it can get. To some people it takes a lot, and others just a little straw. The public has never operated in an innocent until proven guilty fashion. Just take a look at history. Witch hunts, "Commi" searches, and plenty of other examples. So Jeter, Clemens, and anybody else that wants to whine about innocence until proven guilty, please use your head and shut your mouth next time.
