Giants Rip Bonds?

This just goes to show how hypocritical and classless that organization is. I have NEVER been a Barry Bonds fan outside of his years with the Pirates, but the Giants could not have taken a worse position now summed up by the removal of Bonds paraphernalia. They knew all along that the enormous growth of their enormous revenue generator was something outside of natural. However, like a classless organization they turned their heads and soaked up all the profits and glamor that their cartoonish slugger created.

It is not like this is the first year that EVERYONE knew Bonds took steroids, but they brought him back year after year until that precious record was destroyed by a greedy scumbag paved by that greedy organization. By taking down all of his memorabilia, photos, and such, they are making a HUGE statement. Unfortunately for the state of baseball, this statement came 5 years too late.

The Cardinals organization are not much better off after they completely ignored the outrageous numbers that Mark McGwire put up. But in their defense, he had already ballooned in physical stature under the watch of the other Bay area team. However, after Mark McGwire did the best thing and fell of the face of the Earth, they didn't go and try to make themselves feel righteous by taking down all of the Big Mac memories. Neither team is in the clear for watching these things go down, but the Giants just made themselves look that much worse after today's reports of tearing down all the Barry Bonds stuff.

Now, now. The Giants did exactly what any other team would have done in this situation. Let's examine what they were given.

Barry Bonds was an egomaniacal blowhard who knew exactly how to mix the cocktail of steroids, workouts, and batting practice in order to obtain the most hallowed of records in baseball. He was a guy who only cared about himself, leaving teammates, coaches, owners, and journalists in the dust in order to get what he wanted.

HOWEVER, he was indeed chasing a very important record. Whenever a player is a part of that kind of history, love him or hate him, he is going to sell tickets because people will want to say they were there. Knowing this, the Giants kept him on until the record was broken and attendance began to sink. The Giants are an AWFUL team, with no real signs of getting better. They don't sell out the stadium, and now that Bonds is gone, their only star power is Aaron Rowand and an on-his-way-out Barry Zito.

I think the ETHICAL move would have been to unload Bonds once the steroid allegations arose, but business is business. If you were the owner, would you have been able to ignore the sales numbers?

There is a saying, "Sure the guy is a jerk, but he's Our Jerk."  No one liked Barry Bonds when he was in San Francisco, just like no one liked Barry Bonds when he was in Pittsberg.  But he was on the team so they protected him and kept the news media away from him.  Did whatever he wanted, so he could help the team win and sell tickets.  Now, they are anxious to remove all trace of him.  All the memorabilia and paraphernalia goes away.  If he signs with another team, the same thing will happen.  I dont blame San Francisco, they want to go on and look to the future with the players they have on the team.

I could not agree with you more.  By basically trying to eliminate Bonds from their history shows that they were just using him for the money, which doesn't surprise me at all.  This would have been nice to see when Balco was starting to come to light.  At the very least, if the Giants really cared about the problems of steroids, they should have suspended Bonds temporarily while they, the Giants, launched an investigation.  Clearly, MLB was in no hurry to get to the steroid issue because they had to fear a loss in revenue, which in hindsight, probably wouldn't have affected the bottom line that much.  An ESPN poll said that 84% of baseball fans would continue to support the game.  It would have been nice to see that the Giants are an organization that cares about their players.  This act clearly suggests the opposite which is sad to see.

Giants Rip Bonds?

Well Cowboy I for one gotta say I was shocked today when I heard of the stuff the Giants were doing on the car radio. First thing I thought was this club and fans have been Die Hard protectors of this guy and now THIS so SOON!!! I gotta say wow what a dirtbag move! The only reason for the staunch support in the past could only been for$$$ like you said. Im shocked but then again nothing seems to shock me much anymore. Sad but true....................Casey
